Zechariah is Apocalyptic literature. The 1st 8 Chapters characterized by cataclysm, angels, triumph of God. Zechariah cited frequently in Revelation. Prophesies at the same time as Haggai (520 BC)

Ezra links ministry of Zechariah and Haggai – same message that the Temple is the Lord’s House, a place of His blessing

1. Chapter 1

a. Zechariah 1:4 – Do not be like your fathers, to whom the former prophets cried out, ‘Thus says the LORD of hosts, Return from your evil ways and from your evil deeds.’ But they did not hear or pay attention to me, declares the LORD.

i. Joshua, Judges, Samuel, Kings

b. Zech 1:6 – my words, did they not overtake you

c. Zech 1:7-17 – Vision of a horseman

i. Earth is resting and God is stirring up the earth

ii. I will return to my house and I will again return to Jerusalem

iii. Zech 1:17-The Lord will again comfort Jerusalem and reign

d. Zech 1:18-21 – Vision of Horns

i. Scattering nations that scattered Jerusalem

ii. Horns of power

2. Chapter 2 –Man with a Plumb Line

a. Zech 2:5 – I will be a wall of fire around her and glory in her midst

b. Future joy of Zion and nations (6-13)

i. Zechariah 2:10-11 10 Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion, for behold, I come and I will dwell in your midst, declares the LORD. 11 And many nations shall join themselves to the LORD in that day, and shall be my people. And I will dwell in your midst, and you shall know that the LORD of hosts has sent me to you.

ii. Nations shall become my people

3. Chapter 3 – Vision of Joshua the High Priest

a. Zechariah 3:1-5 1 Then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD, and Satan standing at his right hand to accuse him. 2 And the LORD said to Satan, “The LORD rebuke you, O Satan! The LORD who has chosen Jerusalem rebuke you! Is not this a brand plucked from the fire?” 3 Now Joshua was standing before the angel, clothed with filthy garments. 4 And the angel said to those who were standing before him, “Remove the filthy garments from him.” And to him he said, “Behold, I have taken your iniquity away from you, and I will clothe you with pure vestments.” 5 And I said, “Let them put a clean turban on his head.” So they put a clean turban on his head and clothed him with garments. And the angel of the LORD was standing by.

b. Zechariah 3:8-9 8 Hear now, O Joshua the high priest, you and your friends who sit before you, for they are men who are a sign: behold, I will bring my servant the Branch. 9 For behold, on the stone that I have set before Joshua, on a single stone with seven eyes, I will engrave its inscription, declares the LORD of hosts, and I will remove the iniquity of this land in a single day.

4. Chapter 4 – Lampstand and Olive Tree

a. Zechariah 4:1-3 1 And the angel who talked with me came again and woke me, like a man who is awakened out of his sleep. 2 And he said to me, “What do you see?” I said, “I see, and behold, a lampstand all of gold, with a bowl on the top of it, and seven lamps on it, with seven lips on each of the lamps that are on the top of it. 3 And there are two olive trees by it, one on the right of the bowl and the other on its left.”

i. Rev 1-6 (Seven Churches)

ii. Revelation 11:4 4 These are the two olive trees and the two lampstands that stand before the Lord of the earth.

b. Zech 4:6 – Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit

5. Chapter 5

a. Zech 5:1-4 – Flying Scroll – a curse that goes out over the whole land to clear out thieves and those who swear falsely

b. Zech 5:5-11 Vision of Woman in Basket – This is Wickedness, their iniquity in all the land.

6. Chapter 6

a. Zech 6:1-5: Four Chariots – Go patrol the earth…

b. Zech 6:9-15 – The Crown and the Temple

c. Zech 6:12-13 – The Branch shall build the Temple of the Lord and sit on the throne and rule

7. Chapter 7-8

a. Obedience better than fasting

i. Zech 7:5 – …was it for me that you fasted?

ii. Zech 7:9-10 …render true judgments…do not oppress

b. Captivity was due to disobedience – Zech 7:14 …I scattered them

c. Jerusalem will be dwelling place of the Lord

i. Zech 8:2 …I am jealous for Zion with great jealousy

ii. Zech 8:3 …Jerusalem shall be called the faithful city

iii. Zech 8:7-8 …I will save my people…they shall be my people and I will be their God

iv. Zech 8:13 …as you have been a bywork of cursing…Judah and Israel…so I will save you, and you shall be a blessing. Fear not, but let your hands be strong.

d. The Lord will bless the nations – Zechariah 8:20-23 20 “Thus says the LORD of hosts: Peoples shall yet come, even the inhabitants of many cities. 21 The inhabitants of one city shall go to another, saying, ‘Let us go at once to entreat the favor of the LORD and to seek the LORD of hosts; I myself am going.’ 22 Many peoples and strong nations shall come to seek the LORD of hosts in Jerusalem and to entreat the favor of the LORD. 23 Thus says the LORD of hosts: In those days ten men from the nations of every tongue shall take hold of the robe of a Jew, saying, ‘Let us go with you, for we have heard that God is with you.’ ”

a. Judgment on the Lord’s enemies – Zech 9:1-8

c. Zech 9:9-12 – Zechariah 9:9–12 – 9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. 10 I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim and the war horse from Jerusalem; and the battle bow shall be cut off, and he shall speak peace to the nations; his rule shall be from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth. 11 As for you also, because of the blood of my covenant with you, I will set your prisoners free from the waterless pit. 12 Return to your stronghold, O prisoners of hope; today I declare that I will restore to you double.

d. Zech 9:14-17 – The Lord will save his people

10. Chapter 10 – The Restoration for Judah and Israel

a. Zech 10:3 – My anger is hot against the shepherds…for the Lord of hosts cares for his flock

b. Zech 10:6 – I will strengthen Judah and save Joseph…I will bring them back…they shall be as though I had not rejected them…I will answer them.

c. Zech 10:8 – I will whistle for them and gather them in (Good Shepherd knows his sheep)

11. Chapter 11 – The Flock Doomed to be slaughtered

a. Woe to the worthless shepherd…

b. Shepherds will be raised up that will prey on the people.

12. Chapter 12 – The Lord will give Salvation

a. Zech 12:2 Future revival will come when all the cities of the world are burdened by Jerusalem

b. Zech 12:9 – I will seek to destroy nations that come against Jerusalem

c. Zech 12:10-13:1 – Zechariah 12:10–13:1 10 “And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and pleas for mercy, so that, when they look on me, on him whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for an only child, and weep bitterly over him, as one weeps over a firstborn. 11 On that day the mourning in Jerusalem will be as great as the mourning for Hadad-rimmon in the plain of Megiddo. 12 The land shall mourn, each family by itself: the family of the house of David by itself, and their wives by themselves; the family of the house of Nathan by itself, and their wives by themselves; 13 the family of the house of Levi by itself, and their wives by themselves; the family of the Shimeites by itself, and their wives by themselves; 14 and all the families that are left, each by itself, and their wives by themselves. 1 “On that day there shall be a fountain opened for the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, to cleanse them from sin and uncleanness.

13. Chapter 13

a. Zech 13:2-6 – I will cut off idolatry…false prophets will be ashamed of their visions

b. Zech 13:7-9 Zechariah 13:7–9 7 “Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, against the man who stands next to me,” declares the LORD of hosts. “Strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered; I will turn my hand against the little ones. 8 In the whole land, declares the LORD, two thirds shall be cut off and perish, and one third shall be left alive. 9 And I will put this third into the fire, and refine them as one refines silver, and test them as gold is tested. They will call upon my name, and I will answer them. I will say, ‘They are my people’; and they will say, ‘The LORD is my God.’ ”

14. Chapter 14 – Coming Day of the Lord

a. Jerusalem plundered – terrible judgment to come … BUT

b. Zechariah 14:8 On that day living waters shall flow out from Jerusalem, half of them to the eastern sea and half of them to the western sea. It shall continue in summer as in winter.

i. living waters shall flow from Jerusalem (like Eze 47 – water running out to Dead Sea)

c. Zech 14:9 – Lord will the king over all the earth

d. Zech 14:16-21 – Nations shall worship the Lord
